The overnight buses sound great, you save money on accommodation and you can sleep all the way through until you arrive at your destination. Sounds great in theory, but life aint that simple! Even if I could have slept on the bus, there were so many stops along the way that means you are constantly being woken up. On a brighter note, we did have our German friend, Catharina to keep us company. I know, what is it with us and Catherine’s? Most of our good friends we have met travelling have all shared the same name with my wonderful mother. Is it a sign?
When we arrived at ‘Southern Cross Backpackers,’ we didn’t have to wait too long before we could check in. While we were waiting we were able to take full advantage of the hostels free breakfast. Pretty basic, but it did the job. In the main common area, there are flags on display from other countries and in the middle of them, a Dublin flag takes pride of place which is really nice to see. When we checked in and got our room key, we were not one bit pleased to find out that the ‘Ireland’ dorm was full, so we were being out into the ‘England’ one! My God, it was terrible being in England! You want to see all the mosquitos everywhere! Those English really need to get their act together. There is no way that would happen in Ireland! You want to see me killing them all. It was like a massacre! I was a man on a mission. Catharina and Jason helped. Unfortunately, poor Catharina wasn’t cut out for the task. Let’s just say, as a mosquito killer, she wasn’t very good! At least she tried, and I’m sure with a lot of practice, she might get a bit better at it. You never know!
Absolutely exhausted, we managed to get a lift into Agnes Water for a free three hour surfing lesson. I don’t know how we did it, but when something this good is free, then why not. Like us, everyone wanted in on the action which meant a long queue of people waiting in line until their turn to catch a wave. It was good fun regardless. Yet again, I still didn’t manage to stand up! I am determined! I haven’t given up yet!

After our couple of hours trying to catch some waves, myself, Jason, Catharina and our lovely friend Stefanie joined us for a tour of ‘Seventeen Seventy’ a town nearby named aptly after the year ‘Captain Cook’ made his second landing in Australia. The town is tiny. It is basically one very small street next to the beach, but given its historic importance, it is quite an interesting place to visit, particularly as once thinks of yester year! Different times, different world! There is not very much to do apart from check out the beach and go on a trek through the bush.

As we were walking along the beach, we got talking to a woman and while we were chatting to her, Stefanie hurt her foot. She didn’t think anything of it until a few minutes later. It was so bad, that we couldn’t do the trek. Just as we were about to make our way back, we bumped into the same woman, this time with her family, but poor Stefanie, who was filled with so many strong emotions, couldn’t even look at the woman, she had to walk away. We didn’t mind not doing the trek as we would have missed out on the sunset, which was really nice!
24 hours from when you arrive to when you leave really isn’t much time to see a place properly, even if it is very small! From what we did see and experience, the two towns seem quite nice. We did have a fun time trying to kill all the mosquitos and being entertained by Catharina trying her best to squash at least one!
