We’re on a Mission

Location:

Mission Beach, QLD, Australia

We took our first ‘Greyhound’ bus and the driver, an elderly gentleman was extremely friendly and helpful, which makes a big difference. It didn’t take us too long to get to our destination. At the bus stop, we rang ‘The Jackaroo Hostel’ as they offer a free bus service. Just as well, considering the heavens have opened up. When we arrived at the hostel, there wasn’t very much we could do but chill. Hopefully the weather will improve. We did make friends with an Irish girl, Fiona from County Meath. It’s always nice when you meet people from home!

By early afternoon, it did! Thank you God! At least now we can go out and explore. Top of our list is to see the actual ‘Mission Beach.’ And so we did. We got a free bus ride down and enjoyed a nice walk along the beach, listening to the peaceful sound of the ocean. It’s not one of the nicest beaches I have ever seen, but the weather might have something to do with that. Mission Beach has earned itself as being a top skydive destination in Australia. Maybe from way up high, the views are spectacular of the Great Barrier Reef, Mission Beach and the surrounding area. I would still rather do one at the ‘Whitsundays.’ I reckon the views up above would be even nicer!

If there is one thing I would say about the hostel, it has to be its ability to get people out of their little groups and to start talking with others. As we sat down to play trivia, we were put into different groups, which made the night more interesting. It was nice being taken out of your comfort zone and put in a situation where you have to use your people skills and a little bit of your humour to get to know four complete strangers. Thankfully, they were all really nice. At the end of the quiz, Jason and his team were crowned the winners of the night while my team came third which isn’t too bad! As everyone drifted off to bed, myself and Jason stayed up talking to a couple that just checked in who are travelling around Australia for the next month.

Less than 24 hours in the one place really isn’t enough time to get to know somewhere properly. Maybe if we had more time, we would have fallen in love with this place. People we met at the hostel have told us that they have been in Mission Beach for a few weeks and have no immediate plans to move on. We were a bit unlucky, not only with time but also with weather. This place to made for nice weather. It is always going to look its best with the sun shining through a beautiful blue sky. A place like this is just average with grey, dull weather.
